Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is Dubai's quieter, more cultured sibling. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the most beautiful buildings you'll ever enter, the Louvre Abu Dhabi floats on the water like a spaceship, and the corniche stretches for miles along the Persian Gulf. It's wealthier and more reserved than Dubai, with less of the over-the-top spectacle but more genuine cultural ambition. The desert is right at the edge of the city.

Abu Dhabi travel FAQ

How many days do I need in Abu Dhabi?

2 to 3 days. Day one: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (free, one of the few mosques open to non-Muslims — dress modestly, abayas provided), the Corniche waterfront, and Heritage Village. Day two: Louvre Abu Dhabi (AED 63/$17 — the architecture alone is worth it), Saadiyat Island beach, and dinner at the souk on Saadiyat. Day three: Ferrari World on Yas Island (AED 395/$108, world's fastest roller coaster) or a desert safari with dune bashing and a Bedouin dinner (AED 200-400/$55-109). Mangrove kayaking at Jubail is a hidden gem (AED 60-80/$16-22).

Is Abu Dhabi expensive?

More affordable than you'd expect for a Gulf state. Mid-range hotels run AED 300-600/night ($82-163), which is cheaper than Dubai. Restaurant meals range from AED 30-80 ($8-22) at casual spots to AED 150+ ($41+) at fine dining. Street food shawarma and manakish cost AED 10-20 ($2.70-5.45). Taxis are cheap (AED 12 starting fare, about AED 30-50 for most trips). Public buses are AED 2 ($0.55). The big-ticket attractions (Ferrari World, theme parks) are where costs add up.

What's there to do besides the mosque and Louvre?

More than people realize. Yas Island has Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, and the Formula 1 circuit (you can cycle it on non-race days). Saadiyat Island has a pristine public beach and will soon house the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. The mangrove national park in Jubail offers kayaking through mangrove forests with herons and flamingos. A desert safari into the Empty Quarter (Liwa) is a proper Arabian desert experience. The fish market on the Mina Port is authentic and lively. Al Ain Oasis (1.5 hrs drive) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site worth a day trip.
